The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation abbreviated as (MSRTC, or simply ST), is the state run bus service of Maharashtra, India with 16,500 buses which ferry 7 million passengers daily on 18,700 routes. It serves routes to towns and cities within Maharashtra and adjoining states. Apart from locations within the state of Maharashtra, the MSRTC service also covers destinations in neighboring states . It also offers a facility for online booking of tickets for all 18,700 routes.
In 1920s bus service was started in Maharashtra with no regulatory laws. Initially this bus service runs on ad-hoc manner. After the Motar Vehicle Act comes in force in 1939; standardization of routes, schedule of buses, bus stops and regularization of fares took place.
In 1948 Bombay State Government started it’s a public bus transport service, sponsored by State Government known as State Transport of Bpmbay. In same year first silver and blue topped bus raned between Pune and Ahmednagar. In 1950 Central Government passed an Act for Road Transport Corporation, which allows State Government to establish their own Road Transport Corporation. After this act, Bombay State Transport Corporation (BSRTC) formed which later renamed as Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation, after re-organization of States.
MSRTC Bus Fleet and Workshops
MSRTC is the largest bus fleet owner in India which operates 16000 buses daily. MSRTC have its own workshop for manufacturing of buses at Pune, Nagpur and Aurangabad on TATA and Ashok Layland. In these workshop ordinary, city buses and Asiad buses are manufactured. The yearly manufacturing capacity of these three workshops is of 2000 buses. Apart form these three workshops MSRTC have 32 divisional workshops for maintenance of buses and 9 Tyre Rereading plants.
